DISTRICT PROFILE

            Malappuram (literally, a land a tops hills) is situated 50 kms south-east of Kozhikode, bounded by the Nilgiri Hills in the east, the Arabian sea in the west and Thrissur and Palakkad districts in the south. Malappuram is enriched by three great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi and the Bharathappuzha.
            Malappuram has a rich and eventful history. It was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times. This district was the venue for many of the Mappila revolts (uprisings against the British East India Company in Kerala) between 1792 and 1921. It was a famous centre for Hindu - Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy and a place of cultural heritage.

DISTRICT RURAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY MALAPPURAM

ORGANISATIONAL SETUP OF DRDA


Malappuram District Rural Development Agency was formed under the Charitable Societies Act for the Co-ordination, Monitoring and speedy implementation of all anti poverty programmes sponsored and financed by Govt. of India. Funds were received directly from Govt. of India, and State Govt. for distribution among the three tier Panchayats Samities. Earlier, a Governing body consists of all MPs and MLAs of the District, all Block Panchayats Presidents, Representatives of Banks, Voluntary Organisations and line Departments. The President of District Panchayat is the Chairman of DRDA and the District Collector is the Executive Director. The Governing Body have the powers to decide the implementation of various schemes, allocation of funds to various implementating agencies, monitoring and evaluation of Schemes etc.


After the launching of Panchayati Raj System, DRDAs (District Rural Development Agency) were formally abolished as a separate entity and placed under the control of District Panchayat.  The District Panchayat will act as the Governing body.  The DRDA is re-designated as Poverty Alleviation Unit.
